Starbucks has been really expanding their selection of iced coffee drinks beyond the classic iced latte, and I’m absolutely here for it. While I love an iced latte from time to time, it can sometimes feel overly milky and leave a sticky feeling in my throat. Plus, I always have to ask them to halve the amount of syrup they add.

The newer drinks like sweet cream cold foam cold brew coffee (and seasonal variations like the pumpkin cream cold brew) and their shaken espresso drinks are delicious, refreshing, and not overly sweet to begin with. I’m in love.

The brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is one of my favorites, especially because it’s so dang easy to recreate at home.

Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • Not too sweet — This drink is less sweet than the lattes you get at Starbucks, so it’s more refreshing to drink.
  • No special ingredients or syrups — While you can make or buy brown sugar syrup for this drink, it’s just as good with a couple spoons full of plain light brown sugar.
  • Seriously SO easy to make — Five minutes, tops. Three ingredients plus ice. Don’t wait on this one!
  • Saves you money in the coffee shop! — Huge fan here of making cafe-style drinks at home so you can feel fancy without spending bucks at the ‘Bucks. Especially when they’re just as good or better!

Ingredients

  • Espresso: Brew two shots of espresso however you like. Don’t have an espresso machine? I literally never thought I’d recommend instant coffee for actual beverages, but Nescafe Gold Instant Espresso with Rich Crema is surprisingly good. An iced coffee group I’m in on Facebook recommended it and I used it for quite a while while my espresso machine was broken.
  • Brown sugar or brown sugar syrup: Brown sugar will dissolve in your espresso pretty easily when the espresso is warm and you shake it up. But if you have brown sugar syrup, this is a perfect use for it.
  • Ice: Espresso and brown sugar gets shaken with ice and creates a frothy coffee foam while it’s chilling.
  • Oat milk: Get something labeled extra creamy or barista style. Starbucks uses Oatly Barista blend (which is excellent), but I think Planet Oat Barista Style is just as good for a fraction of the cost.
  • Cinnamon (optional): To sprinkle on top, if you want to recreate the Starbucks experience. I prefer it without.

Equipment

The only equipment you need for this drink is something with a lid you can shake your espresso in. This could be:

  • A cocktail shaker.
  • A mason jar.
  • A lidded tumbler that closes in a leak-proof way (my favorite option, since I don’t have to wash an extra dish). I have one of the 12 oz. Stainless Steel Traveler Tumblers from Starbucks and I use it all the time for this.

How to Make an Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso

  1. Shake together espresso, brown sugar, and ice. The sugar will dissolve, the espresso will chill, and the mixture will become foamy.
  2. Fill ‘er up with oat milk. Either pour the foamy espresso and ice into another glass and top with oatmilk, or just pour oatmilk into your shaker container.
  3. Sprinkle with cinnamon, if you want. You can drink without stirring if you want to taste the bitter foam with the creamy oatmilk, or mix it up a little first.

That’s it. Seriously. It’s that easy. Go make it! And enjoy!

  • 1 cup ice
  • ½ cup oat milk extra creamy or barista style
  • cinnamon optional

Instructions

  • Add espresso and brown sugar or brown sugar syrup to a mason jar, cocktail shaker, or lidded leakproof tumbler with a cup of ice. Close the lid and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds or so. Notes

  1. If you don’t have an espresso maker, I recommend Nespresso Gold Espresso Powder with Rich Crema. Use 2 teaspoons with 1/2 cup of hot water for your two shots of espresso.
  2. For a sweeter drink, use 3 teaspoons brown sugar or 1.5 tablespoons brown sugar syrup.
