About Pinch Me, I’m Eating

Are you someone who thinks food and cooking is part of the spice of life, enjoys eating well, and loves to “travel” from the comfort your own home through cuisine? Do you need simple, easy recipes for dinner during the week but still enjoy spending a little more time in the kitchen when you can?

You’ll feel right at home here!

I’m a self-taught home cook with an affinity for the gourmet, and I believe that food is one of life’s greatest little pleasures. It’s an opportunity for indulgence, a source of comfort, and a way to connect with the people in my life.

At Pinch Me, I’m Eating, you’ll find no shortage of easy weeknight meals, with the occasional “project” recipe for when you don’t mind lingering in the kitchen or waiting for bread to rise overnight.

I also share finger foods (fancy wine and cheese nights and afternoon tea are my favorites!) and from-scratch staples to stock your fridge and pantry.

My recipes are inspired by memorable dishes I’ve had at restaurants (I love going out to eat!), places I’ve lived and visited, and the traditional cuisine of Charleston, South Carolina, where I live. So among other things, you’ll find plenty of Lowcountry classics like mustard-based Carolina Gold barbecue sauce, benne wafers, and pimento cheese!

About Me

Hi, I’m Caroline, and I love food. Fancy food, comfort food, finger food, ethnic food, you name it. I have an obsession with finger foods, and I can’t get enough of fancy crostinis and tea sandwiches. I’ve never been one to buy store-bought salad dressings; ask me to make a sandwich and it will probably involve toasting the bread and melting the cheese under a broiler, or turning it into a panini.

When I was under 10 years old, and home computers were still fairly newfangled, one of my first personal projects was typing up a menu for my at-home restaurant, Caroline Street Cafe. The items included “chicken noodle warm salad”, egg salad, and raw cookie dough, off the top of my head, and ranged from 5-10 cents (I didn’t want to overcharge). My sole customer was my two-year-older sister Emily, who frequented the cafe in our kitchen during lunch on weekends. For a nickel, I’d hard-boil a single egg, devil it, and wash the dishes.

My mom taught me how make salad dressing, and I learned how easy and gratifying it is to make something from scratch with just a few fresh ingredients. My stepmom Lucy even made me an apron and painted a custom chef’s hat for me, which has a place of honor on top of my kitchen cabinets today. I still wear it sometimes when I’m feeling especially chef-y.

My love of good food and cooking has continued to blossom, and I hope to share with you my flavor excursions so you can enjoy my culinary creations too.

When I’m not cooking or eating, you might find me singing jazz tunes with my talented classical guitar-playing husband Mike, swing dancing, playing in the dirt (i.e., gardening), cuddling our kittens, and watching my Reeves turtles try to bite my finger through the aquarium glass — but I’m probably still thinking about food.
