Homemade Blackening Seasoning for the Pantry

Stock your pantry with the best ever homemade blackened seasoning! This classic Cajun spice blend is perfect to keep on hand for blackening fish, chicken, or shrimp. Use it for cooking all sorts of dinners like mahi mahi fish tacos or blackened salmon! Low carb and gluten free.

  • 4 tbsp paprika Sweet, smoked, or a mixture
  • 2 tbsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp oregano
  • 2 tbsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 -2 tsp cayenne pepper to taste


  • Add all ingredients to an airtight glass spice jar. Close and shake to combine.
  • Store in a cool, dry place like a cabinet, drawer, or pantry. Use on everything!!


Feel free to adjust the spices to meet your needs. For a lower-sodium version, reduce or remove the salt. For a spicier or less spicy version, adjust the amount of cayenne pepper.
