Fact: Everything bagels are the best bagels there are. If you disagree you can fight me.

Is a bagel even worth it if it’s not coated in a heavy blanket of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic flakes, salt, and onion? I mean, maybe if there’s some really good cream cheese, or smoked salmon. But even with those other perks, the everything bagel seasoning blend really brings it to another level.

And if it can do so much for a bagel, just imagine what it can do for your other favorite foods! On scrambled eggs? So much better. Coating a cheese ball? To die for. Sprinkled over hummus? Everyone will be clamoring for that first scoop on top.

Avocado toast, chicken, popcorn, potato salad, you name it, it’s better with everything bagel seasoning. The sky’s the limit.

Everything bagel seasoning as its own entity really took off when Trader Joe’s released their Everything but the Bagel blend. This recipe is just as good as store-bought blends and is customizable to your own tastes! Plus, if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s right down the road (mine’s at least a 30 minute drive) it’s much easier to mix together your own.

You may know I’m a big fan of making my own seasoning blends to keep in the pantry, like this blackened seasoning. They’re easy to whip up in just a few minutes and so convenient to have on hand to add a quick punch of flavor to whatever you’re cooking. And you can customize them to your preferences, like if you want to add more or less salt.

This recipe is another one that’s great to have around for when something just needs that extra kick of texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Homemade everything bagel seasoning is an easy blend of just a few simple ingredients:

  • Sesame seeds: I used white sesame seeds, but using a mixture of both white and black seeds can make your seasoning blend even more eye-catching! Black sesame seeds are slightly nuttier or more bitter than white seeds, so be aware of the taste.
  • Poppy seeds:
  • Dried Minced Garlic:
  • Dried Minced Onion: Don’t use garlic powder or onion powder here, the larger dehydrated garlic and onion flakes are really necessary for the right texture. I find they soften up just the right amount when exposed to the oils in the seeds.
  • Coarse or Flaky salt: I use kosher salt, but you can use flaky sea salt or pretzel salt if you wish. Avoid fine sea salt and regular table salt, since the granules are too small to stay suspended in the bagel spice blend.

Expert Tips

  • Keep it mixed. Even when using coarse salt, small granules can settle at the bottom of the jar, so make sure to give it a gentle shake or roll before using to re-mix the blend.
  • Storing and organizing. These are the spice jars I use in my kitchen. Check out my post on how to organize your spices for details and inspiration!

  • Use as a spice rub for bone-in, skin-on chicken and bake it
  • Brush olive oil on sandwich rolls or sliders, then sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning and bake
  • Add to a classic tomato-mayo sandwich on white bread (I like my tomato sandwiches pretty classic, but I think this would be a great variation!)
